In the 2013 Grapefruit League home opener the Tigers fell to the Blue Jays 10-3 from Joker Marchant Stadium.
Detroit starter Anibal Sanchez pitched two innings allowing zero runs, with three hits, zero walks and one strikeout.
Prince Fielder hit a two-run shot, his first of the spring, to give the Tigers a quick 2-0 lead. Fellow slugger Miguel Cabrera hit his first home run of the spring two innings later. However this came after the Blue Jays were able to get three runs at the top of the third to initially take a 3-2 lead.
Tigers fans also got a good first look at potential closer Bruce Rondon who very much impressed Tigers catcher Alex Avila.
“I’m sure he was a little nervous his first time out, a little wild, but he settled down,” catcher Alex Avila said. “It was fun to catch him. By far he has one of the best arms I’ve ever seen.”
Rondon issued a walk to Brett Lawrie and a double to Adam Lind in the fifth before he was ultimately able to get himself out of the jam with no damage done.
The Tigers bullpen however faltered after that allowing four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh as the Blue Jays went on to a 10-3 victory.
