According to a report by Matt Helms of the Detroit Free Press, Mike Ilitch’s entertainment firm owes the city of Detroit nearly $1 million dollars in property taxes on the Joe Louis Arena and Cobo Arena stretching back to 2009.
The details of the debt to the city emerged Thursday as State lawmakers were debating Ilitch’s $650 million dollar entertainment district proposal that would include a new arena for the Wings.
The tax documents, dated Dec. 10, show that the Ilitch family’s Olympia Entertainment, for years an engine of stability and growth in downtown Detroit showcasing the Detroit Red Wings, the Detroit Tigers and the Fox Theatre, is in arrears $971,482.52 on property taxes on the two riverfront properties, with another $58,162.53 due next month.
Despite what Ilitch’s company owes, it doesn’t seem like this will be a tremendous hurdle in his efforts to build the entertainment district. The partisan bickering on unrelated issues still looks to be one of the biggest obstacles in Ilitch breaking ground.
