It looks like Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg is headed for Switzerland.
In the wake of the NHL lockout, Zetterberg has reportedly signed with EV Zug of the Swiss League according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
Zetterberg becomes the latest big name Red Wing and NHLer to head overseas for the duration of the NHL lockout which has already claimed the first two weeks of the regular season. Fellow Detroit teammates Pavel Datsyuk and Valtteri Filppula have already settled in with European clubs while other guys like Niklas Kronwall and Johan Franzen are still weighing their options.
The move by Zetterberg, a bona fide NHL star is more indication that the league and NHLPA are still very far apart and are nowhere close to coming to an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement. This is especially the case considering just last week Zetterberg mentioned that he was going to stick around the Metro Detroit area and see what happens with those ongoing CBA negotiations.
But like most of the contracts that have been given out to NHL players overseas, Zetterberg’s does have an out clause meaning Wings fans don’t have to worry about one of their top forwards being stuck in Europe if and when the NHL decides to resume play.
