A slightly twisted ankle suffered during last night’s on field celebrations will keep Max Scherzer from making his final start Wednesday. Tigers manager Jim Leyland made the announcement Tuesday.
“On the field, during the celebration, when people were jumping on the pile, somebody stepped on his ankle,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.
After dealing with a shoulder strain during the final weeks of the regular season, Scherzer was hoping he could get five innings as a final tune up before the playoffs. However the Tigers don’t want to take any chances with the ankle despite his arm now feeling fine.
Leyland also mentioned that Drew Smyly will not get the start Wednesday but should get at least an inning of work in.
This really shouldn’t be a big issue for Scherzer and the Tigers. Leyland reiterated that it was a slightly twisted ankle and not a sprain. However the Tigers skipper couldn’t give a time frame when Scherzer would return but it’s not really foreseeable that he misses his start in the ALDS.
