Love him or hate him, Mike Valenti is staying in Detroit for the long-term.

According to the station’s website, 97.1 The Ticket re-signed the afternoon host to a ‘long-term’ contract keeping the polarizing Valenti on the airwaves in Detroit for the foreseeable future.

“I am pleased Mike will continue to be part of many Detroiters drive home every day for years to come”  said 97.1 program director Jimmy Powers. “He has the uncanny ability to give listeners a unique perspective, honesty and strong opinions like very few in the industry.”

Valenti also weighed in on his re-signing:

“I’m happy to continue to be part of one of the great sports talk stations in the country where I can speak to, inform and entertain my loyal audience daily,”

There’s no doubt how valuable Valenti is to 97.1’s overall success. In fact, you could make the argument that behind the Tigers the brash New Yorker is probably the second most important aspect at that station. Remember it was Valenti who the station chose to keep after the Lions reportedly wanted him fired for his takes on the team while 97.1 served as a flagship for the organization. Since 97.1 didn’t part ways with Valenti the Lions chose instead to move to WJR starting in 2016.

97.1 didn’t give any specifics on Valenti’s new deal however Jeff Moss of DetroitSportsRag.com reported back on March 31st that the two sides agreed on a 10-year extension. Moss also reported that Valenti and his wife Melissa had no interest in leaving the Detroit area for larger markets in Philadelphia or New York City.

Rumor has it Valenti’s name was being thrown around to take over for Mike Francesca in the New York market.

UPDATE: Jeff Moss of the DSR corrected his original report on the 10-year deal.
