Red Wings Notes: Eaves’ return this season in doubt, Wings taking Michigan LW Phil Di Giuseppe in mock draft

Eaves’ return this season in doubt

After suffering a concussion and broken jaw during a game with the Nashville Predators on November 26th, Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves finally returned to the ice with some light skating Thursday.

However the downside to this is despite the healed jaw, Eaves is still experiencing persistent headaches which could put his return this season in jeaporady.

“I’m going to plan that he’s not going to play this year, but I’m hoping he does play this year,” general manager Ken Holland said. “It’s been two months now, the jaw is pretty well healed. He’s got concussion symptoms. He’s being very conservative.”

ESPN mock draft has the Wings selecting Michigan LW Phil Di Giuseppe

It may be NFL mock draft season, but ESPN is looking ahead to June when the NHL holds their amateur draft. And with the 30th pick of the first round, they have the Detroit Red Wings selecting LW Phil Di Giuseppe from the University of Michigan.

A solid combination player with a two-way game is exactly the type of player the Red Wings find a roster spot for. DiGiuseppe is scoring at the collegiate level but is also very strong on the puck and defensively sound.

The freshman so far this season has eight goals and 11 assists in 31 games.

Here’s a brief scouting report from Hockey’s Futures.

Some will classify Di Giuseppe as a “pure-scorer”. And while there is no doubt that he can put the puck into net, there is far more to his game than just scoring goals. He is equally adept as a playmaker. Two areas that set Di Giuseppe apart from many other freshmen are his tremendous hockey instincts and his ability to cycle pucks down low. He thinks the game extremely well and has a low panic point. Di Giuseppe is also quite good not only around the net but along the boards and corners as well. He sees the ice and follows/supports plays really well too. Di Giuseppe possesses great poise and patience with the puck, and his decision-making is very good.
