Tim Tebow

The New York Mets have signed former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow to a minor league deal according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and will now report to either the instructional league in Florida or the Arizona Fall League.

Tebow return to the Big Apple (of sorts) stems from his August 30th workout for 20 Major League teams in San Diego where he drew a mixed reaction. Some thought his performance was “better than expected” while one American League scout – who spoke on a condition of anonymity – said the workout “was like watching an actor trying to portray a baseball player”.

But Tebow still drew the interest and actually got more interest other than the Mets.

However can anyone really be surprised it was the Mets who ultimately ended up signing Tebow?

Remember this is the same team still paying Bobby Bonilla $1.19 million dollars every July first until the year 2035 comes to an end. It was also the Mets who offered county singer Garth Brooks a tryout back in 2000 but in New York’s defense that was the country singer’s third attempt at becoming a Major League Baseball player.

Bottom line, if it wasn’t the Mets signing Tebow it more than likely would have been some other Major League team. So instead of taking that sly shot at the Mets, perhaps we take that sugar coated jab at Major League Baseball in general since all teams have at times brought aboard someone’s kid within the organization or a big name that’s going to turn heads and write headlines. Remember it was the San Diego Padres who drafted Johnny Manziel despite Johnny Football not playing competitive baseball since high school.

Tebow is a good athlete, even at 29. There’s not denying that. But he’s a low risk prospect who will garner plenty of attention for the Mets. My god… imagine IF he some how gets called up to play a home game at Citi Field. I can see that New York media circus now.
