According to Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller the San Diego Padres have found their next manager.

Andy Green was the third base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2015 after spending 2011-14 as a manager in the minor leagues within the Diamondbacks organization. This move is kind of unexpected as the reported finalists by many baseball “insiders” were former Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and Pittsburgh Pirates third base coach Rick Sofield.

Although Green lacks big league managing experience, he did win the Southern League’s manager of the year in 2013 and 2014 while steering the Mobile BayBears, the AA affiliate of the Diamondbacks.

Green is only 38-years old and last played in the big leagues as recently as 2009. His hire by the Padres shows the an increasing trend that MLB clubs are hiring younger managers instead of giving the old and wise crowd another shot.

Green played 140 career games and hit .200/.240/.265 as a second baseman, third baseman, and left fielder for the Diamondbacks and New York Mets after being selected in the 24th round of the 2000 MLB draft by Arizona.

Green replaces Pat Murphy, who was the interm-manager after Bud Black was fired 65 games into the 2015 season after a 649-713 record in nine seasons in San Diego.
