For the past several seasons fans of the Nashville Predators have taken to throwing catfish on the ice, something that isn’t foreign to hockey, especially in the NHL. I mean we have the famed octopus chucking in Detroit, the rats in Florida and hats for hockey in general when a player scores three goals in a game.
But what those traditions have that the catfish thing in Nashville doesn’t is tradition in and of itself.

You see, the only reason why throwing catfish on the ice became a thing is not because it represents some old Stanley Cup requisite or a connection with an iconic player within the organization. The reason why Predators fans throw the catfish is because Red Wings fans throw octopus and they needed a counter.
Oh, and apparently catfish is a southern thing. Which means I guess you can also throw grits or some collared greens out on the ice and achieve the same message.
