Hardly does an athlete live up to a huge multi-year deal.

Max Scherzer though may be making the Tigers wish they dished out a little more money to bring him back since the Washington starter may be arguably turning himself into the best right hander in the game.

Scherzer’s run for the top may have further been proven today when he nearly completed a perfect game against the Milwaukee Brewers until a bloop single from Carlos Gomez in the 7th broke it up. Scherzer continued to be dominant though throwing 119 total pitches, still giving up just one hit while walking 1 and striking out 16. In fact the Washington ace was still reaching 96 on the radar gun in the 8th inning.

What was truly underrated about Scherzer’s performance was his overall game score pointed out by Deadspin.  In his near perfect game Scherzer recorded a 100 game score which as Deadspin notes is the 12th time in MLB history a pitcher has reached triple digits in a nine inning game. Compared to the 23 perfect games in Major League history what Scherzer did was actually rarer than perfection itself.

To further add to the miraculousness of the Scherzer performance, a perfect game score is 114 meaning a pitcher would’ve had to go nine innings and strike out every batter he faced.

So yeah, that seven-year deal for $210M isn’t looking too bad right now.
