UPDATE: The Red Sox acquire pitching prospects Heath Hembree and Edwin Escobar from the Giants.

UPDATE: Jon Heyman reporting that the Red Sox trade Jake Peavy to the San Francisco Giants for prospects. Peavy is a 2007 Cy Young winner.

Sitting 10.5 back in the AL East, the Red Sox may be ready to waive the white flag on the 2014 season.

According to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Red Sox and Giants are in serious negotiations on Jake Peavy and a deal is close.

Talks between the two teams really started to materialize yesterday as the Giants who remain contenders out of the NL West all of a sudden find themselves with a shallow talent pool in the pitching department. Currently San Francisco has Yusmeiro Petit pitching in place for the injured Matt Cain.

Currently in the final year of his deal with a 2014 payout of $14.M, Peavy has a 4.72 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 124 innings. He’s also very familiar with Giants manager Bruce Bochy during both of their times with the San Diego Padres.

Despite the impending deal of Peavy, the thought right now out of Boston is the team will not be dealing Jon Lester.
